When your mind is constantly racing, it’s easy to feel 'trapped' inside your own head. The burnout can make it hard to feel lik yourself. Whether it’s mid-week exhaustion, anxiety, ADHD-related overwhelm or Neurodivergent-related overwhelm, it can feel impossible to find a sense of calm and relax.

Rose in a Glass designs tools to help you navigate these exact moments.  Today, we’re highlighting the aromatherapy equivalent of a weighted blanket - Patchouli Essential Oil.

Discover why it’s the perfect sensory anchor for navigating overwhelm.

What is Patchouli?

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is a bushy aromatic herb from the mint family, with stems reaching two or three feet (about 0.75 meters) in height. It has small, pale pink-white flowers and is native to tropical regions of Asia. The essential oil is extracted via steam distillation from the dried and fermented leaves of the plant.

It has a deep, earthy, and slightly sweet aroma that actually improves with age as it matures. In Botanical Chemistry, it is prized for being a "base note"—it lingers longer and provides a steady, grounding foundation for any blend.

patchouli has been a staple in traditional medicines, aromatherapy, and spiritual practices for centuries with deep roots in natural wellness, meditation, and personal care.

How Patchouli Supports the Nervous System

In my Hampshire studio, I chose Patchouli for the Lavender & Patchouli collection because of its incredible chemical makeup, grounding effects and associations with calm and balance.

Benefits in Aromatherapy

- Grounding Energy:  it helps bring a restless mind back into the body, perfect
for relaxation, happiness, anxiety relief and de-stressing.

- Boosts Confidence: Helps to ease insecurities and foster a sense of self-acceptance and presence.

- Clears Negativity: By stimulating the release of "happy hormones" like serotonin, it helps uplift the spirit and disperse negative thought patterns.

- Aids Meditation: Its calming effect on the nervous system makes it a staple for deepening focus and physical relaxation.

- Natural Air Purifier: Beyond the scent, it has natural antimicrobial properties that help clear the air in your space.

Usage Tips & Blending:

Diffuser & Aromatherapy: Use in a diffuser to create a calm, soothing, and grounded environment, often paired with lavender or citrus oils for balance. Its calming aroma is popular in meditation to ease anxiety and promote relaxation.

Massage & Bath: Dilute with a carrier oil (such as jojoba, coconut, or sweet almond oil) to create a comforting massage blend that helps soothe sore muscles, relieve tension, and deeply moisturize the skin. It can also be added to bathwater for a relaxing, luxurious soak.

Skincare & Beauty: Known for its skin-repairing and anti-inflammatory properties, patchouli is used to manage dry skin, acne, dermatitis, and eczema. It is also added to shampoos to combat dandruff and improve scalp health.

Insect Repellent & Household: Patchouli is effective at repelling insects like moths and mosquitoes. It is used as a natural deodorizer and added to household cleaners.

The Sensory Benefits

1. The "Weighted Blanket" Effect

For a neurodivergent brain that feels overstimulated, Patchouli acts as a natural "grounder." It provides a sense of stability when things feel chaotic, helping to reduce the physical signs of nervous tension and "jitteriness."

2. Emotional Balancing

Patchouli is unique because it is both grounding and uplifting. It doesn’t just make you feel calm, it helps you feel stable. This makes it an essential tool for those days when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally scattered or stuck in a loop of negative thoughts.

3. A Tool for Physical Presence

In our busy, digital world, it’s easy to lose touch with our physical selves. Using a Patchouli-based room spray or candle creates a Sensory Anchor that encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with the present moment.
